Dietitian Reviews the Oatmeal Protein Pie


We sent Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Andie Grange, our famous Oatmeal Protein Pies, and this is what she had to say:

 

“K, if you're not a fan of Little Debbies...can we even be friends?? Kidding but I'm a HUGE fan of Oatmeal Cream Pies. One of my favorite treats ever. Oatmeal cookies, creamy frosting...is there anything better? I think not.

That's why I was so excited when I discovered FINAFLEX. They make PROTEIN Oatmeal Cream Pies, aka Oatmeal Protein Pies. They are a fun twist on one of my favorite treats (Lil Deb's) and they are packed with nutrition PLUS they have about a million flavors!

So why do I love these FINAFLEX Oatmeal Protein Pies? Let's talk it out...

  1. They have EIGHT different flavors so you just can't get bored (Original Marshmallow, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Awesome Apple Pie, Krazy Key Lime Pie, Double Chocolate Chip, Georgia Peach Pie, Very Blueberry Pie and Strawberry Cream Pie). My favorites are probably the Blueberry and Strawberry. SO good.
  2. They have 12 grams of FIBER
  3. They have 14 grams of PROTEIN

So NUMBER 1: So many flavors. It seems like sometimes when you find a healthier snack/treat option there are only a couple to choose from and sometimes it can get boring. FINAFLEX has eight different oatmeal protein pie options so you can definitely find something you like and never get bored! I love that! 

NUMBER 2: FIBER! You know I'm always preaching about the importance of fiber in a healthy diet. Fiber helps us stay satisfied and full longer (so you're not going to be hungry right after you eat this), helps keep you regular (if ya know what I mean!), helps the satiety factor (helps you feel more "satisfied" with your food), helps weight loss and helps reduce cholesterol. So all around...pretty amazing, and 12 grams is A LOT. As a reference...your average cookie (and of course this will vary a lot) has generally 1-2 grams of fiber. Yeah...a HUGE difference.

NUMBER 3: PROTEIN. We all know it can be tough to get enough protein in our diet sometimes. That's why when I can get 14 grams in ONE healthy snack, I'm going to consider that a major win. Again, as a reference...an average cookie will have about 1-3 grams of protein. Protein helps build muscle, help with satiety and fullness, plays a major role in many of the body's cell building and other processes. It even helps your body fight off infections as it's part of building the cells that support your immune system. 

LONG STORY SHORT. These Pies are a great option! Like I said in my Instagram post (@the_baking_dietitian) it's NOT going to taste just like a Little Debbie...because it's not and because it's much more nutritious! But it IS going to taste GOOD. The Pies are chewy and cinnamon-y and the filling adds a good creaminess. I liked the flavor of the blueberry and strawberry pies filling the best! There are about 310-330 calories per serving but they’re BIG snacks and if we're being honest, that's what you're going to find in almost any protein snack (actually a lot of them are more around 350-400) and it’s definitely a lot less than you’ll find in a regular cookie or treat! If you're eating a protein bar...you'll often find similar calories so, it's a pretty reasonable amount for what you get. Plus you‘re getting better nutrition from those calories.

So what are you waiting for? Give them a try! You can buy them online and I've even seen them at Walmart! If you're looking for a high protein/high fiber and yummy healthier treat/dessert option. You're going to want to give these a try!”
