History and origin of Green Tea

It was first recognized outside of China in the early 1900's and quickly gained popularity across various countries. Green tea is made up from Camellia sinensis, a plant that originates in China. Although this tea started off in China, its production has spread across many Asian countries.

The Beginnings

The earliest reference dates back to the 2737 BC when the Chinese Emperor Shennong got to taste the water that had a leaf from the Camelia plant boiled into it. The tea was initially associated with only elite Chinese society and was expensive.

Its popularity continued to pick up, especially in the sixteenth century when it was introduced to other Asian and European countries by traders.
